Fusina to provide carbon footprint data for all aluminum products

December 6, 2022

Italy-based aluminum rolling mill Niche Fusina Rolled Products (Fusina) will start providing its customers with product carbon footprint information for its tailor-made coils, metal sheets and plates.

Prospective buyers will be able to request the average product carbon footprint information when making purchasing decisions, and customers will receive a carbon footprint report attached to their invoices, for use in their own Scope 3 reporting and product lifecycle calculations.

Fusina-CarbonChain

The scheme is being rolled out immediately, starting with marine and road transportation products delivered into Germany, Italy, Benelux, and Scandinavian markets. It is expected that in early 2023 carbon footprints will be available across all Fusina’s products and countries.

Fusina is using the services of carbon accounting platform CarbonChain for the calculations. The measurements will include all greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e), using the ‘cradle-to-gate’ approach. This covers:

  • All upstream supply chain emissions associated with input materials (primary and scrap aluminum), from the extraction of bauxite at the mine to delivery at Fusina’s plants;
  • All process emissions involved in operating Fusina’s integrated plant, which contains a cast house, rolling mills and finishing lines.

As part of making product emissions available to customers, Fusina will be calculating its entire corporate carbon footprint associated with manufacturing aluminum (Scopes 1, 2 and 3), to understand the impact of existing efforts towards emissions reductions (including recycling on-site and use of 30% scrap in input aluminum), and to proactively continue to identify ways to reduce the carbon intensity of its products, production and supply chain.

Aluminum is the most carbon-intense base metal, at the same time as being a critical material in the energy transition. Fusina’s customer base represents the marine, commercial transportation and industrial sectors, who increasingly want to find lower-carbon options, whether to meet their own regulatory and reporting requirements, or to meet their own climate targets towards net zero.

Vincenzo Zinni, CEO, Niche Fusina Rolled Products, said:

“We’re deeply committed to transparency and action on the GHG emissions of our products. CarbonChain will enable us to show customers precisely how our products perform, and inform the development of our own emissions reduction targets and strategies. We believe we’re among the first movers in aluminum production to measure our upstream and process emissions at this level of accuracy, and hope to contribute to a move to transparency and positive action in the industry.”

Adam Hearne, CEO and Co-founder, CarbonChain, said:

“CarbonChain is tailored for commodity supply chains. Our specialist expertise in calculating emissions from extraction to end product will help Fusina and its customers understand where their most important emissions lie and how to reduce them, and benchmark their performance. We hope this spurs action across industrial supply chains and supports the manufacturing industry in its efforts to meet urgent global climate targets.”

CarbonChain uses an independent emissions database and third-party verified methodology, following the world’s most trusted carbon accounting standards. The platform provides granular emissions tracking at the asset level, making the measurements as accurate as possible, with auditable and certifiable reports.

About Niche Fusina Rolled Products (Fusina)
Niche Fusina Rolled Products is one of the world’s leading producers of industrial rolled aluminum products. The plant is located in the industrial area of Fusina, close to Venice, and was built to support the Italian aluminum industry. Over the years, different companies have taken ownership of the plant and major investments have upgraded the equipment to maintain a competitive position in the market. The plant is composed of a cast house and rolling mill, to manufacturer finished products such as "sheets”, “plates” and “shates”, with a production capacity of 75,000 metric tons. The plant specializes in serving the commercial transportation, marine and general engineering sectors.

About CarbonChain
CarbonChain builds technology that puts carbon data at the heart of climate action in the world’s most polluting industries. Its AI-powered carbon accounting platform automates the tracking of supply chain greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for companies, traders, and financiers in the highest-emitting sectors (metals and mining, oil and gas, and agriculture). With accurate, granular, asset-level data covering the end-to-end supply chain, CarbonChain’s software unlocks unrivalled insight into carbon-related risks and opportunities in near real-time. This enables the most climate-critical sectors, and those who finance them, to tackle risks, manage emissions, and build resilience as they accelerate the transition to a net-zero economy. CarbonChain is a CDP accredited solutions provider, a TCFD supporter, and a proud member of ResponsibleSteel. CarbonChain was part of the Y Combinator Summer 2020 cohort and is supported by the UK government’s innovation arm (InnovateUK), the NatWest accelerator, and the London Business School Incubator.
